Editor-in-Chief (EIC), Coordinator – The highest authority responsible for the scientific integrity and relevance of a journal. This role encompasses defining the editorial strategy to maintain the journal’s reputation and visibility, overseeing the peer review process to ensure the quality and originality of published articles, supervising the editorial team, establishing best practices and research ethics policies, and ensuring transparency in communications with authors and reviewers.

Note: At the JBCS, the EIC is responsible for handling appeals of decisions made by EEs and AEs. The EIC may assign articles within their AE area and act as an AE for submissions.

Executive Editor (EE) – Plays a crucial role in planning and executing the editorial strategy set at the EIC level. Acting as a direct link between the editorial team and the EIC, the EE coordinates the manuscript review process, manages deadlines and workflows, and helps implement quality and scientific integrity policies. The EE also provides leadership in guiding reviewers and authors, contributing to the continuous improvement of published content. Together with the EIC, the EE monitors research field trends, fosters innovation, and ensures the journal remains relevant and competitive in the academic landscape.

Note: The EE distributes submissions within their area to the AE level. The EE may assign articles within their AE area and act as an AE for submissions.

Associate Editor (AE) – Responsible for assessing the scientific relevance of submitted manuscripts as assigned by the EIC or EE, selecting qualified reviewers, and supervising the peer review process. The AE works closely with the EE and EIC, providing expert opinions on the scientific quality of articles, ensuring alignment with ethical and best practice policies, and contributing to publication decisions. In this way, the AE’s participation ensures academic excellence, enhancing the rigor and relevance of published material.

General Notes:

  • The EIC and EE may also oversee the peer review process for an article, provided it falls within their AE area. Both EIC and EE have AE areas in ScholarOne
  • At the JBCS, invitations for Perspectives are the responsibility of the EIC, who may consult or consider suggestions.
  • The JBCS Office (staff) interacts with all editorial levels but has no authority over technical-scientific matters or editorial policies. The Office assists all editorial levels according to editorial demands, in addition to other duties established by the PubliSBQ.
